Nerdy Turnip Farm Field Day

Location: Rochester, NH

Topic: Growing Organic Tomatoes

Nerdy Turnip Farm is a small-scale, certified organic vegetable farm near downtown Rochester, NH, run by Sam & Caleb Monohon. They produce on just under half an acre of land, including outdoor permanent beds, a greenhouse for propagation, and a caterpillar tunnel and high tunnel for season extension and trellised crops. They grow a wide variety of vegetables to meet the demands of a summer and fall CSA share program, farmers markets, restaurant sales and a farm store. Tomatoes are among one of their more profitable crops and, depending on tomato variety and growth habits, are grown in their high tunnel, caterpillar tunnel and outdoor beds. They utilize a variety of growing methods, including mulch, trellising, and intercropping, to incorporate this high value crop into their limited space. In this workshop, Sam and Caleb will also share how they’re adapting their tomato production to the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather and pest/disease pressures.
