An organic farmer and gardener “pretty much all my life,” he was an original member of the Michigan Organic Growers. Dr. Maerlender’s professional life started as a sports psychologist and transitioned to clinical and research neuropsychology, specializing in learning disorders and sports concussions. He spent over twenty years at Dartmouth Hitchcock, Medical Center before moving to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where he established a clinical research lab focused on sports concussions with the Athletic Department.  He returned to New Hampshire to retire into teaching psychology at Saint Anselm College in Manchester.  He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and books. His most recent academic book for Spinger Nature is Adolescent Public Mental Health: Why systems need changing and how a public mental health approach can work, with Dr. Gail Bray (2024). Through his career he played for and coached rugby teams at numerous colleges, including Dartmouth College and the University of Notre Dame. He recently self-published his rugby memoir: Blacklisted: A memoir of race and rugby in apartheid South Africa (2026). Dr. M. lives in North Sutton, NH with his partner-wife and several pets, where he writes and grows much of his food, organically, of course.
