As one of the oldest grassroots organic farming organizations in the country, NOFA’s alternative agriculture agenda continually runs into political realities that can help or thwart our education and advocacy work promoting the values and production of organic food.
Each of the seven NOFA organizations conducts policy work appropriate to its home state, while also sending representatives to the NOFA Interstate Council to address a wider range of regional, national and international issues such as the integrity of the National Organic Program, food safety, GMOs and fair contracts.
Alliances and linkages with other organizations make us stronger. NOFA acts in concert with advocacy groups that stand for family-scale organic farming -- including the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, the National Organic Coalition, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, the Domestic Fair Trade Association and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements. With NOFA’s grassroots participation these groups have played major roles in shaping food safety legislation to protect the interests of small farmers, as well protesting the expansion of genetically engineered crops, campaigning for organic-friendly programs in the Farm Bills and advocating for appropriate scale organic farming at the United Nations.
The NOFA-IC Policy Committee carries out these efforts with the help of a Policy Coordinator, hired part-time to further policy initiatives and represent NOFA at allied organizational meetings. Current funding for NOFA policy work and state chapter capacity-building comes from a one-time grant from Ben & Jerry’s. For future funding NOFA-IC hopes to establish a way to generate revenue for policy work using a NOFA branded credit card that is now available to NOFA members who wish to support NOFA’s policy initiatives.
